Did your personality ever got you in trouble? In the “Odyssey” the main character, Odysseus had traits that got him in a lot of trouble. After fighting in the Troyan war for years they finally got to go home, but Oddyseus personality stoped him and his men from getting home. Two of Odysseus traits that got him introuble were his arrogance and being attractive. His arrogance and being attractive kept him from getting home. One trait that Odysseus had that helped him was his loyalty to his son and wife. Odysseus personality affected his life in a bad way.
One of the most important traits that Odysseus had was that he is very arrogant. One example is when Odysseus tells the cyclpos,”Cyclops if ever mortal man inquires how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laerters’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (p.669). Odysseus tells this to the cyclops after him and his men scaped from his cave. After scaping from the cyclops’ island he felt very important. This trait gets him in a lot of travel because when he blinded the cyclops, the cyclops cursed him. The curse was that he will never get home and if he did he will lost all his men, and find a lot of problems in his home. He also by being arrogant got in trouble with the gods because he didn’t respect them; he thought that he didn’t need their help to get home. For his arrogance after ten years is when he finally got home.
Another trait that Odyssues had was that he was very attractive. One example is when calypso had him with her for seven years. She told Odysseus this when he was trying to leave, “Son of Laertes, versatile Odysseus, after these years with me, you still desire your old home? Even so, I wish you well (p.654).Odysseus had been with calypso for seven years, calypso didn’t wanted him to leave her. Odysseus wanted to leave since along time but he couldn’t, while being there he felt very gloomy. This trait is very imporatant because for being charming he was stuck with Calypso for seven years. Calypso let Odysseus go until Zeus ordered her to let him go.
Another important trait that Odysseus had was that he was always loyal to his men and wife. One example that show that he was loyal to his wife is when he tells calypso”My lady goddess, there is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope-how well I know-would seem a shade before your majesty, Death and old age being unknow to you, while she must die. Yet, it is true, each day I long for home, long for the sight of home… (p.654). Odysseus while being with calypso, he had always long for home. Because of his loyalty is that he got home, the thing that kept him going was the only tought of seen his son and wife. So, his layalty was a big part of the story.
Odysseus arrogance, loyalty and being charming got him in a lot of trouble. His arrogance and being charming stoped him from getting home for ten years. His loyalty helped him, because the thought of seeing his son and wife gave him force to keep on going. Trought out the story, Odysseus learned that his arrogance was the responsible for his problems. Odysseus changed for his son and wife. He learned that his personality can bring you problems not only to you but for the people around you too. Many people don’t realize that our personality can change our lives and the lives of people around us for good or for bad.
